What is influenza?
- Most commonly known as the “flu,” influenza is a severe
respiratory illness that is easily spread and can lead to
severe complications or even death. - The flu is easily passed from person to person through
coughing, sneezing or contact with an infected person. - Flu symptoms often include high fever, headache, fatigue,
cough, sore throat, runny nose and body aches.
Who is at high risk
for catching the flu?
- The flu impacts people of all ages.
- Children and elderly people are typically more vulnerable to
seasonal flu. - Almost 90% of deaths caused by the flu occur among
people 65 and older.
Can I get the flu from the flu shot?
- The flu shot does not contain the live virus, so it is impossible to get the flu from the vaccine.
- Side effects, such as mild soreness, redness, swelling, headache or fever, may occur in some people.
- Immunization is safe, effective and the best way to help prevent the flu.
Why is it necessary to get the flu shot every year?
- The types of flu viruses change from year to year.
- Immunity to the flu can wane after a year.
- New vaccines are made each year to combat new and current strains.
